The problem
The workplace-health budget goes unused, and a growing talent pool stays invisible
German companies are dealing with rising sick days: on average, every employee is out for almost 19 days a year, and mental-health-related absences keep climbing. At the same time, up to €600 per employee per year is tax-free for workplace health promotion (§3 No. 34 EStG); most companies barely use it.
At the same time, a growing share of the workforce is neurodivergent (ADHD, autism, dyslexia). 15 to 20% of people are neurodivergent, and the share is above average among knowledge workers. Yet almost every workplace-health platform lacks explicit features for this talent pool: too loud, too distracting, no structure support, no protection from overstimulation.

The lever
§3 No. 34 EStG: €600 tax-free, and almost nobody uses it in full
Under §3 No. 34 EStG, employers can pay up to €600 per employee per year on top of regular pay, free of tax and social-security contributions, for workplace health promotion measures. It is an allowance, not a loan: whatever is paid stays with the employee.
The requirement: measures must meet §§20, 20b SGB V. The following areas explicitly qualify:
Back and musculoskeletal health (§20 SGB V): movement and posture programmes, back-safe exercises.
Stress and mental health: burnout prevention, mindfulness, relaxation.
Habit reduction: nicotine cessation, alcohol reduction, addiction prevention (§20b SGB V).
Sleep and recovery: sleep coaching qualifies under stress management.
Nutrition and movement: everyday movement, movement breaks at the workplace.
In addition to the §3 No. 34 line, neurodivergent inclusion and focus training can be billed through diversity/inclusion budgets and workplace health management (BGM), since they demonstrably lower turnover and burnout risk among ND employees.
"Instead of five separate single-purpose tools (fitness, mental health, habits, back, finances), the entire €600 budget can be used with one platform that genuinely covers every area."

Competitive edge
Neurodivergent inclusion: the unused channel in workplace health
ADHD, autism, dyscalculia and high sensitivity are not rare edge cases: they affect an estimated 15 to 20% of any larger workforce. These employees often do not fail because of competence, but because of missing structure, overstimulating environments and classic to-do systems built for neurotypical brains.
No well-known workplace-health provider (not Wellhub/Urban Sports, not 7Mind for Business, not Humanoo) explicitly addresses this talent pool. Ankaa is the first workplace-health platform with ND design principles at its core: low-stimulation interfaces, an AI coach that helps you get started, micro-steps instead of task overload, hands-free voice guidance.
Classic workplace-health platforms Gaps
- Fitness or mental health or finances (silos)
- No ND-specific features
- No habit reduction (nicotine/alcohol)
- No AI coach that acts
- No optional wall display
Ankaa Complete
- All qualifying workplace-health areas in one system
- ND design core (ADHD/autism-friendly)
- Habit reduction: nicotine, alcohol, sugar, screen time
- AI coach with tool use (calendar, smart home, tracking)
- Optional break-room wall display (Ankaa Box)
ROI & evidence
The numbers behind workplace-health investments
Workplace health is not charity, it is a measurable business decision. Public studies document concrete returns:
- Wellness programme ROI: 2.7:1; for every €1 in programme cost, roughly €2.70 comes back through fewer sick days. A conservative lower bound from several cohort studies.
- Smoking-cessation ROI: up to 15:1 (German study, Holisticare/WIdO). Habit reduction is the single strongest lever.
- 73% lower burnout risk among employees who feel their employer cares about their health. Turnover costs (replacement: 50 to 200% of an annual salary) drop accordingly.
- ND talent pool: companies that actively practise ND inclusion report measurably lower turnover and fewer sick days in this group; hard figures are still scarce (a research gap), but the pattern is consistent across employer reports.
Note: ROI figures are public estimates from published programme evaluations, not a guarantee. We recommend running your own numbers with the interactive ROI calculator.
The solution
Ankaa: a workplace-health system that actually acts
Ankaa is not a knowledge base, it is an AI coach with tool use: it reads recovery data from the Apple Watch, controls smart-home lighting for focus phases, blocks calendar time for breaks, breaks down overwhelming tasks into micro-steps and sends reminders at the right time. All low-stimulation, GDPR-compliant, on phone, tablet and laptop with no install; optionally as a wall display in the break room (Ankaa Box).
Back & movement: guideline-aligned (NVL low back pain), back-safe exercises even with disc issues, a recovery-aware workout plan from watch data.
Sleep & stress: sleep coaching with HRV/resting heart rate, breathing and micro-meditations, breaks at the right time.
Habit reduction: nicotine pouches, smoking, vaping, alcohol, sugar, screen time: a plan, streaks, money saved, relapse support.
ND inclusion: focus mode (only the one next thing), body doubling with the coach, micro-steps, hands-free voice guidance, low-stimulation UI.
Finances: budget, savings plan, portfolio; the coach suggests how to allocate free money. Addresses the ADHD comorbidity of impulse spending.
GDPR & compliance: EU hosting, technically isolated accounts, anonymised aggregate reports, works-council agreement template + DPA template, an annual §3 No. 34 confirmation letter.
